4 April 2009: The official participants list contains 140 names now. Five less than the last time, but actually too many for the tournament. In The Netherlands we have a saying: a promise is a promise, which means, that if all 140 come to Salou, they can play in the tournament. If your name is on the participants list and you now that you can not come for any reason, please let me know as soon as possible, because maybe this means a place for somebody on the waiting list. De officiële deelnemerslijst bevat nu 140 namen. Vijf minder dan de laatste keer, maar eigenlijk nog teveel voor het toernooi. Maar, beloofd is beloofd, en dat betekent dat als alle 140 naar Salou komen, ze kunnen deelnemen. Als uw naam op de lijst voorkomt en u weet, dat u om wat voor reden dan ook, niet kunt komen, informeer mij s.v.p., want dat betekent heel misschien een plaats voor iemand van de wachtlijst. Peter Pippel (Organiser of Salou-2009) 18 March 2009: We are very proud to announce, that besides the assistant referee Junyan Yang, a delegation of 14 people will come to Salou. Seven of them will play in the tournament and, as far as I know, this will be the first tournament (outside China) where people from the People’s Republic of China participate in a draughts tournament. The list of participants contains 145 names. This means that people, who want their name on the waiting list has to consider, that the chances to play in the tournament are very, very small. Peter Pippel (Organiser of Salou-2009) March 2009: The popularity of the international Salou-open draughts tournament is amazing. The maximum number of 130 participants has been reached and therefore we have to announce a subscription stop. From now on, we will put the name of every new subscriber on a waiting list. This means, that new subscribers have to wait until begin May to be sure if there is a place in the tournament. It is of course possible to come to Salou for a good holiday. We have experienced that each year some people cannot come to Salou anyway, but this year we don’t expect this to be a great number of participants. Including the non-players we will be with almost 200 people in Salou, because of the draughts tournament. Peter Pippel (Organiser of Salou-2009) November 2008: In de wandelgangen werd de vraag gesteld of Salou-2009 wel zou doorgaan. NATUURLIJK gaat Salou-2009 door. De vraag werd gesteld, omdat Peter Pippel, de organisator achter het toernooi van Salou, een ernstig gezondheidsprobleem zou hebben. Gedeeltelijk is dat waar. Wat is namelijk het verhaal? Peter kreeg op 3 oktober een linkszijdig herseninfarct. Gevolg: het rechterbeen en de rechterarm functioneerden grotendeels niet meer, terwijl ook het spraakvermogen verminderd was. Nu, net aan vier weken later, loopt Peter al weer zonder hulpmiddelen, terwijl de rechterarm ook al weer veel kan. Mensen, die hem niet kennen, zullen aan de spraak niet horen dat er iets aan de hand is (geweest). Kortom: ik heb veel geluk gehad en volgens de doktoren ben ik over enkele maanden weer (bijna) volledig de oude. Some questions were asked about Salou-2009. Will the tournament take place in 2009? OF COURSE Salou-2009 will take place. Why this question? Because Peter Pippel, organisor of the tournament in Salou, had a serious health problem. This is partly true. What is the story? On October the 3rd Peter had an Cerabral Vascular Accident; which means that part of his brain was temporarily without oxygen. After this his right leg and right arm did not function any more and the way of speaking was not normal. Now, just 4 weeks later, Peter walks without any help, his arm is doing quite well and somebody who does not know Peter, will not notice anything about his way of speaking.
